Pele, the Brazilian Soccer Player!

Pele is one of the most famous soccer players of all time. He is retired now. He played his last game on October 1, 1977. He was known for his character. Presidents changed their plans to meet with him, kings and queens have played soccer with him. Even Michel Jordan and Tiger Woods aren’t even comparable to the amount of adoration that he receives. One newscaster even said “how do you spell Pele? G-O-D.” He is the only soccer player ever to participate and win three World Cup Championships. He has had one of the greatest soccer careers of all time. Here is his story.

Pele was born on October 23, 1940. He was born in the small Brazilian town of Tres Coracoes. Until he was 7 or 8, he was known by his birth name of Edison. Where he lived, everyone wasn’t called by their birth name, but by a nickname that his or her family gave them. His family nickname was “Dico”. His father had played professional soccer, but his career had ended short, leaving little money for their family. However, he had no idea that his son would become one of the most famous ones of all time. Pele and his family lived in poverty. His parents had a very hard time feeding for him and his brother, Zoca (that was his brother’s nickname). However, Pele and Zoca and their friend made the best of it. They played soccer whenever they got the chance. Though they didn’t have a ball, a field, or any cleats, Pele still made progress when they played. Pele’s mother tried to encourage her son the best that she could, but she was scared that the same thing would happen to her son that happened her husband. Because of this fear, she never watched a full game of his live. Soon he was discovered when he was working. He was a shoe shiner, and a scout found him. Soon he started in the league. The scout had said to the board “This boy will be one of the greatest players of all time”, and soon he was.
Once he was discovered, he started to learn from his father. Soon he was the top scorer in his league. Pele started to play professional soccer when he was sixteen. To be exact, June in 1956 in Santos. When he traveled to Santos to start practicing before the season started, he saw the Atlantic Ocean for the first time ever. When he was leaving, he now admits that he felt sickened and squeamish. That season, his team was incredible. They won so many games and lost very few. After that season, he was chosen for Brazil’s national team. He wasn’t even seventeen! That season they played for the World Cup.
