This is our Periodic Table and Elements unit!!!
Mendeleev- created the first periodic table using atomic mass and characteristics to sort the elements
Periodic table- table that uses atomic number to organize the elements
Nuclues- the central core of an atom containing protons and usallly netrons
Proton-a small,positively charged particl in the nucleus of the atom.
Neutron-a small particle in the nucleus of the atom, with no electrical charge.
Electron-a tiny, negatively charged particle that moves around the nucleus of an atom.
Atomic Number- how many protons an element has
Atomic Mass- average mass of an element
Symbol- 1 or 2 letters that represent an element
Periods- horizontal rows
Families/groups- vertical columns
Valence electrons- outer orbit electrons
Orbits-the things that holds the electrons in their place.
Know how many electrons are in the first three orbits- 2, 8,8
Metals-meatals are- hard shiney ductile malleable. metals are also good conductors of electricity and are magnetic.
Alloys-two or more metals mixed together.
Nonmetals- located to the right of the zigzag line and are the exact oppisite of metals.
Metalloids-have characteristics of both metals and nonmetals.

Telll how many valence electrons are in each family and what group number each family is in.

Alkali Metals- one valence electron and is located in group 1
Alkaline earth metals- two valence electrons and located in group 2
Transition elements-0 valence electrons and located in groups3-12
Lanthanides and Actinides- bottom elements
Carbon Family-row 14 and 3 valence electrons
Nitrogen Gamily-row 15 and has 5 valence electrons
Oxygen Family- row 16 and has 5 valence electrons
Halogen Family-group 17 and has 7 valence electrons

Noble Gases- group 18 and has 0 valence electrons
